I have been painting since 1988, and I am completely self-taught. That is to say, I’ve never taken art classes. I have, however, learned a great deal by studying the masters, either in books or viewing the masterpieces up close in museums. As such, my teachers include: Velasquez, Hopper, Dali, Rothko, Picasso, Monet, Gauguin, Rubens, VanGogh, Seurat, Cezanne, Pollack, Caravaggio and many, many more.
I do have a bachelors degree from the University of Texas, in the somewhat artistic field of Radio-Television-Film. Upon graduation, I worked for several years in the music industry of Austin as a recording engineer. As a result, I feel that the experience of constructing musical recordings has had a large impact on my approach to creating visual imagery.
Early in my painting career I became fascinated by the dot matrix with which black and white photos are constructed in newspapers. Using a magnifying glass, and later enlarging a photocopy, I began attempting to recreate the newsprint images dot for dot. This is, of course, nearly impossible, so the resulting paintings are quite interesting, especially as I experimented with different colors to replace the black and white. I have dubbed this technique “matrix pointelism” and market the collection under the pseudonym of Luis Sabor. Later, I began using my Luis Sabor alias as a stage name for my musical performance endeavors.
Besides matrix pointelism, I enjoy employing a variety of techniques and create works in several genres: impressionism, cubism, surrealism, synthetism and a type of enlarged pointelism that incorporates elements of all of these. I have tried to confine myself to Southwestern themes, thus my vast collection of “Adobe” works and growing Horse and Cowboy works. I am fond of portraits as well, and enjoy working on commissions.
Aside of my artistic and musical endeavors, I have a passion for Latin America. I have traveled to many countries and hope to experience many more. I have a dream project of creating a string of mini-bookstores to promote literacy in small villages. If this idea intrigues you, by all means contact me and I will elaborate. email: email@example.com
